James Lethbridge was born in Yorkshire, UK, and initially trained as a studio potter. He gradually switched to glass making, and acquired a wealth of experience working with various Glass and Crystal studios in the West Midlands. He has since graduated from the Royal College of Art in London, with an MA in Applied Art, Ceramics and Glass, in 2007.
Through the study of organic sources of inspiration, James’s work exists as piece of collected, abstracted, surreal and almost alien piece of sculptural glass. He explores form, space, material and texture, using only the purity of transparent glass and light to achieve compelling installations that call to mind different points of reference, from science fiction, biological laboratory to comic books characters.
James has been exhibited his work in various Glass events in the UK during the last two years, including the British Glass Biennale 2008, for which he picked up the runner up for the Glass Seller prize and People’s prize. In 2008 he exhibited at Design Miami/Basel and at the Milan Furniture Fair where he was short-listed for the Bombay Sapphire Glass prize. He has been selected by the curators of Design Miami to present a piece in the ‘Nature’ special exhibition, which will take place in December 2008.
